YYC Calgary International Airport celebrates its fifth YYC Navigators Familiarization Day

Juliana de Oliviera Drummond and her son, Daniel, 3, boarded a very special flight at YYC Calgary International Airport Saturday.

They were part of nearly 30 families who participated in the fifth YYC Navigators Familiarization Day.

The de Oliviera Drummond family has a trip booked to Brazil in March 2019, and they want to prepare Daniel for the journey.

"It’s more than a 24 hour trip, so for him, to understand all the steps, waiting, going from one airport to another one," said de Oliveira Drummond. "It’s a long way to get there."

First offered in 2015, the program introduces guests with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and their families, to a traditional airport experience.

"Our goal is to make air travel a more viable option for everyone. This program gives families the confidence to book that dream trip," said Peggy Blacklock, Manager of Airport Community Engagement at The Calgary Airport Authority. "Thanks to their positive experience with YYC Navigators, families will be familiar enough with air travel to make their next trip not only possible but enjoyable."

Families checked in with Air Canada, and went through the pre-board security process before boarding their aircraft. On board, the flight crew seated everyone and completed their flight safety announcements.

After exiting the plane, the guests were greeted with Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) representatives, who stamped their mock passports and welcomed them to Canada.

A number of local ASD-focused agencies participate in the program including: Society for Treatment of Autism, Ability 4 Good, Lead Foundation, Renfrew Educational Services and New Heights School & Learning Services.

"Families are very excited about the program. I’ve heard nothing but positive feedback from it and they’re happy to participate," said Felicia Madore of the Society for Treatment of Autism.

"It’s rewarding to them, because it builds their confidence."

HMSHost and the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) also partnered in the event.

The program compliments YYC Calgary International Airport’s vision to make travel effortless and memorable.
