YYC’s new baggage system is a go

YYC’s baggage project came online today creating the most advanced system in the continent. The new 17.4-kilometre network connects our baggage tracks in the newly built International Terminal Building (ITB) to our 1977 built Domestic Terminal Building (DTB) and is the latest milestone in this project.

Bags can travel from Concourse A to E in just 13.5 minutes, less than half the time it would take to walk the same distance. The system also can track and sort luggage throughout the entire airport using an RFID system, taking away the fear of lost luggage. No other airport in North America has a baggage system built to this scale and level of integration as we do here are YYC. One easy way to spot the system is: “If it’s blue, it’s new.” (See the quiz question at the end of the article).

“A big thank you to all the people that worked so hard to achieve this major milestone for YYC. I truly appreciate and respect the commitment from the baggage team that is going to be with us to see the culmination of this five-year project,” says Mike Maxwell, VP Infrastructure and IT.

The next step in the project will be the opening of the Ticket Counter 7 (TC7) in December 2019. The remodeled WestJet Check-in area opening summer 2020 will be the final step in project.

When you hear your family or friends talking about bags while travelling, be sure to share our news that we have the most advanced baggage system in North America.

If you have any questions regarding the baggage system or would like a tour, please contact James Praestegaard, the General Manager for Baggage.

Quiz question: what was the colour of the old baggage system?
