Summary: Members of YYC join forces to recognize the heroic actions of Garda employees who saved the life of a passenger.

On Sunday, Feb. 2, at approximately 9:35 a.m. near U.S. connections screening area, a passenger fainted and hit her head on the roller tables while repacking her bag. Screening Officer Kwang Yao (Kevin) Chang, immediately rushed to the passenger’s aid. The passenger then became unresponsive, and Kevin started to perform CPR. A travelling anesthesiologist jumped in to assist, but Kevin remained on the scene to help the doctor with the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and anything else the doctor required.

Simultaneously, Edin Yu Chun Kam, one of the Garda Checkpoint Managers, called 911 and remained on the line until emergency responders arrived on the scene. Matin Khidri, also a Garda Checkpoint Manager, retrieved the AED and brought it to the scene.

At 9:46 a.m., the passenger was no longer in cardiac arrest and was conscious and breathing. A short time later, EMS transported her to the hospital. A successful outcome thanks to the courage of all involved.

Representatives from CATSA, Garda, Alberta Health Services (AHS) EMS and the Calgary Airport Authority came together on Feb. 25 to recognize the three Garda employees who were instrumental in helping save this passenger’s life.

During the recognition event, the Garda employees were recognized by Brian Haynes, Manager Service Delivery Manager for CATSA and Loan Ho, General Manager of Garda.

Adam Loria, the AHS EMS Public Education Officer also presented a Citizen’s Recognition Award.

Sean Curtis, General Manager Emergency Response Services and Debbie Stahl, Director Community Engagement, presented White Hats and YYC Bucks.

Medical calls are not uncommon in the airport, and we often see the airport’s AED’s being brought to the scene to help save someone’s life. We applaud all Crew and Team YYC who don’t hesitate to assist with medical incidents.
