Temperature checks begin July 30

As of July 30 at 10 a.m., Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) screening officers will conduct temperature checks for all passengers and staff going post security. Screening will be done by either a thermal image camera or handheld thermal scanner.

Mandatory temperature screenings are required by Transport Canada. They are an additional measure in Canada’s multi-layered approach to protect the safety of air passengers and non-passengers, help reduce the spread of COVID-19 and restore passenger confidence in the Canadian aviation system.

If staff or traveller is identified with an elevated temperature and is unable to present a medical certificate that provides a rationale for the elevated temperature, they will be sent to a dedicated location that respects physical distancing guidelines for a ten-minute rest period, followed by a second temperature reading.

If the temperature reading is higher than 38° after the first and second check, the staff member or traveller will need to leave the airport immediately.

  • For staff, CATSA will immediately notify the Integrated Operations Centre (IOC) and the staff’s access will be suspended for 14 days. Go immediately to a place where you can self-isolate for 14-days and use private transportation such as a personal vehicle. You may not continue to work pre-security. See FAQs for the process on returning to work.
  • Passengers will be asked to pick up their bags from their respective airline on the Arrivals level and recommended to use their own private transportation.

Please see attached Frequently Asked Questions for specific details, Transport Canada’s Fact Sheet and the poster on how to wear a mask properly

We all play a role in ensuring travel remains safe for everyone. The temperature checks layered with wearing masks, physical distancing, and personal hygiene paired up with the airport’s increased cleaning and additional hand sanitizers, are all critical components of our #FlyHealthyYYC program. What are the possibilities of cheating the temperature machine by eating certain medications to bring down the fever? Aspirin for example.
