Hats off to one of our volunteer’s, Ken Wielchowicz, who will be awarded the Order of St. John at the Chief’s Award Gala on May 16, 2012.

Ken is receiving this award for his bravery and chivalry on August 5, 2011. During a flash flood, Ken’s neighbor, Richard Yeoman, was swept under his parked vehicle and became trapped. Ken attempted to pull Richard free, but was unable due to the force of the water.

Ken stayed with Richard, performing CPR and attempting to flag down other motorists for assistance. Four citizens lifted the car and they were able to pull Richard free. At this point, EMS arrived and continued with CPR. Unfortunately, Richard suffered a massive heart attack and passed away. Ken will be joining 30,000 members worldwide in receiving this most prestigious award.

Ken joined the White Hat Volunteer Program in August 2010. He works with the Wednesday night crew and loves helping people.
