Watch a recap of National Indigenous Day

On June 21, we gathered in International Arrivals to celebrate 2019 National Indigenous Peoples Day and Indigenous History Month in Canada. We were honoured to have our Treaty 7 neighbors join us including Elder Frank Turning Robe and the dancers, singers and musicians from Siksika First Nation; Councillor Kelsey Big Plume from TsuuT’ina; Councillor Carlin Black Rabbit representing Siksika Nation and Lowa Beebe, YYC’s Indigenous Cultural Advisor. Thank you to these folks for sharing their words, culture and history with us! You can watch a recap of the ceremony here.

It’s important for us to remember and acknowledge the Calgary International Airport land is the traditional territory of the Blackfoot Confederacy. Calgary is the home of the Treaty 7 Nations of southern Alberta which include the three Blackfoot Confederacy Nations: Siksika, Piikani and Kainai/blood; the Tsuut’ina Nation; and the three Stoney Nakoda Nations: Chiniki, Bearspaw and Wesley Nations. Calgary is also home to the Metis Nation of Alberta Region 3.

Here at the airport, we welcome millions of visitors each year to our region. We encourage visitors to attend local cultural events and visit historical sites, museums and Indigenous communities. These experiences will enrich our visitor’s understanding of Canada’s history and peoples.
