COVID-19 Update: March 24

Team YYC Update - March 24, 2020

Good afternoon

See the COVID-19 page for a summary of the information you need to know about COVID-19 at YYC.

Government Updates

  1. COVID-19 has affected our daily lives in ways we didn’t anticipate. To help support our mental health and wellness, Alberta Health Services has launched ‘Text4Hope’. If you are feeling stress, anxiety and depression due to the COVID-19 crisis, Text COVID19HOPE to 393939 to subscribe. Every day you will receive daily messages with advice and encouragement helpful in developing healthy personal coping skills and resiliency. See below for today’s message. We can all use some positivity through these challenging times.

It has also been reported that Wuhan, China will be lifting their lockdown on April 8.  So, we know there is a light at the end of tunnel as long as we continue to practice physical distancing and for those who are required to self-isolate, please do so. The best way to stop this virus is to stay home. Adhere to the directives, educate yourself with the facts and stay connected to each other. Reach out to those who need help and be kind to one another.

Airline Updates

  1. We empathize with WestJetters and all employees impacted by the sudden and dramatic impacts to our aviation industry. Globally, airlines and airports are being forced to make very difficult business decisions because of the dramatic reduction in passenger volumes. We will continue collaborating with our partner, WestJet as we all adjust to these unprecedented circumstances. See WestJet’s blog update for more information.

YYC Calgary International Airport Updates

  1. We’re currently working to optimize our airport facility in order to reduce costs and resources during this uncertain time. Stay tuned in the coming weeks to teamyyc.com for updates on YYC’s Facility Consolidation and Optimization Plan. Thank you in advance for your support and understanding as we work though this plan quickly and efficiently.

  2. Later today (March 24), Non Passenger Screening A (NPS A) and TDAR A will be closed. All staff can either enter through NPS B, Circle Lock Departures or NPS Utilities. This is the first step of YYC’s Facility Consolidation and Optimization Plan.

  3. Here are some of the frequently asked questions we’re receiving from the public, guests and Team YYC members in the past few days. We wanted to make sure you get the answers in case you’re getting the same questions.

How are you ensuring that people going through Canadian Customs (CBSA) are properly physical distancing?
Extra signage has been placed in highly visible areas in the hall. Tape is now on the floor to mark areas to stand that are two metres apart while in queues.

How are you ensuring that people going through security (CATSA) line ups are properly physical distancing?

Due to reduced guest and staff volume, physical distancing is naturally occurring at Non-Passenger Screening (NPS) and Pre-Board Screening (PBS) points. Later today (March 24), NPS A will be closed. Airport staff should use NPS B, which will remain open.

How are you ensuring that people are properly physically distancing around the airport such as carousels, waiting for passenger arrivals?

Digital signage is in effect across the airport including all baggage carousels. Extra print signage has been put in place in the International Bag Hall. Terminal Operations Specialists are patrolling the terminal around the clock to encourage physical distancing.

The Pass Control Office waiting area no longer operates as a wait room. Employees with appointments must wait outside until invited to enter when it is their turn. At the end of their appointment, they will be let out the back door. Print signage is in place outside the Pass office to encourage physical distancing.

  1. Natasha Koshowski, YYC’s Emergency Response Manager, explains the differences between social/physical distancing and self-isolation in this five-minute video.

  2. Here are the latest updates on:

As always, safety and security is our top priority and we will continue to work closely with PHAC and AHS and all our government partners to fully support them in any new public health measures at YYC to ensure the safety of the entire airport community. We all have an important role to play in the fight against COVID-19. We know this is unprecedented but thank you to all of you who are and continue to ensure the safety of yourselves and others. We will get through this together! And as a reminder, if you are sick, STAY HOME!!
